She entered Heaven’s gates on Wednesday, March 27, 2024, at McMahon Tomlinson Nursing Center in Lawton, Oklahoma. Burial will be in the Frederick Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Orr Gray Gish Funeral Home.

She was born on May 20, 1942, in Oklahoma, to Laymon Cephus Hicks and Sophina Ashalintubby Hicks.

She grew up in Frederick and attended Frederick schools, graduating from Frederick High School with the Class of 1960. She worked at Gibsons then Alco for many years. She was the Sunday School secretary, active with Women’s Ministries, and pianist at the First Assembly of God church in Frederick.

She loved God and walked with him daily. With all the challenges she faced through her illness, she never forgot the relationship she had with God. She would pray over every meal, every drink, every breath she took she would stop and give praise to God for his many blessings.

One of those blessings was her grandchildren, she had a special bond with each one and you could see it on her face when each came to visit.

Special memories shared from each grandchild was, “Grandma always wanted to play dominos or Wahoo and of course occasionally cheated,” as the family remembers the words from sweet Kandi “cheater cheater Mom.” Now one might think, fast track to winning but with grandma her desire to spend time with each child was a blessing received. She loved each one.

Mary was part of trio, singing hymns such as “Amazing Grace,” “I’ll Fly Away,” “Hallelujah Square” and Choctaw Hymns with Doe and Kandi.

She had a love for music; she played the piano by ear no need for music notes. She was incredibly talented and could listen to a song and begin playing every note, this was God’s blessing to her, and she shared her blessing with everyone who was around.

She was a seamstress and very crafty. She made bears, rabbits, hanging dish towels and attended the craft fair alongside with Doe. She took special pride in her ribbons and encouraged each of her children, Chris, Eric, Kim, and Kandi to pursue their own hobbies then praised their accomplishments.

She loved to be outside, and she enjoyed her time with Charlie. She would say “Fifty years with that man,” which could mean numerous things depending on the topic. Bless his heart, she was still a little mad with him leaving this world too early so I imagine he received a “what for” on their reunion up in Heaven.

Mary loved her visits from all the family she especially loved all her nieces and nephews, each brought joy to her heart. Upon leaving her side, you would hear these words “Let us pray.” Her love for the word of God spilled over to everyone she crossed paths with; she would pause, smile, and say “God Bless you” or “Be ready, God will return.”

Mary was a prophet of God and a blessing to whomever she spoke too.

She was preceded in death by the love of her life, Charlie Teague on March 29, 2011; her son: Chris Teague on August 4, 2016, her daughter-in-law Denise Teague on April 29th, 2022; her daughter: Kandi Teague on August 15. 2022; her sister Dora Williams on January 22, 2024; her infant sister: Virginia in 1944; her father: Laymon Hicks in 1996; her mother: Sophina Hicks in 2007; her brother: Houston Hicks in 2012; her sister: Rena Dennis-Cornelius in 2013.
