Funeral service for former Frederick resident, Bess Hughes age 92, of Iowa Park, Texas, will be at 1:00 p.m., Monday, April 15, 2024, at the Jackson Funeral Home Chapel, 921 West Gladstone Avenue, Frederick, Oklahoma, 73542, with Rev. Les Banks officiating. Burial will follow in the Frederick Memorial Cemetery, under the direction of Jackson Funeral Home. Mrs. Hughes went to be with her Lord and Savior, on Tuesday, April 9, 2024, at the Hospice of Wichita Falls Inpatient Care Center.

The family will receive friends and family on Sunday afternoon, April 14, 2024, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., at the Jackson Funeral Home Chapel in Frederick.

Lula Bess (Splawn) Hughes was born August 1, 1931, in Wellington, Texas, to Joel Archlus and Hazel (Starcher) Splawn. She attended Victory Consolidated #11 School, east of Davidson, Oklahoma. On July 11, 1948, she and Charles Wilson “Charlie” Hughes were united in marriage, at the Antioch Baptist Church in the Victory Community.

Bess was an exceptional helpmate to Charlie with his farming operation and provided excellent care for him in his later years. She loved serving her family, church, and community; She was an excellent homemaker, excellent seamstress, enjoyed crocheting and loved to fish. Bess enjoyed cooking and some of specialties were: Fried Chicken, Roast, Potatoes and Carrots, Fried Potatoes, Fried Okra, Yeast Rolls, Pecan Pies, and German Chocolate Cakes.

She was a faithful member of the Pacific Avenue Missionary Baptist Church in Iowa Park, Texas.

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Joe and Patti Hughes, of Iowa Park, Texas, and Dale and Janet Hughes, of Wichita Falls, Texas; one sister and brotherin- law, Barbara and Leroy Hickerson, of Amarillo, Texas; six grandchildren, Shellye and Greg Sullivan, Sharla Hughes, Jason Hughes, Ashley and Tommy Gonzales, David Roach, and Kimberly Harris; ten great-grandchildren, Madison and Nathan Jacobi, Mason Sullivan, Bryson Sullivan, Caden Catlin, Kelsie Catlin, Laurie Roach, Kaylie Roach, Bryon Roach, Tommy Gonzales, and Joey Gonzales; two great-great-grandchildren, Charlotte Jacobi, and Augustine Jacobi; and a host of nieces, nephews, other family members, and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Joel and Hazel Splawn; her husband, Charles “Charlie” Hughes; and two brothers, Leon Splawn and Jim Nicholas.
