County agriculture student awarded scholarship STILLWATER, Okla. – A Tillman County student was honored by Oklahoma State University at the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources (CASNR) Scholarships and Awards Banquet on March 26. In all, approximately $452,500 was awarded at the banquet, part of $1,016,400 in scholarships and awards presented this spring to deserving OSU agriculture students for the 2010-2011 school year.“This is yet another record level of scholarships for the College, despite the economic downturn. Our donors are to be commended for their generosity and wise investment in CASNR students and the OSU Foundation is to be commended for good stewardship of our scholarship endowments,” said Ed Miller, CASNR associate dean. “Scholarships are increasingly important to our students and their families and the college is committed to help students reach their educational goals. We are very excited to exceed the one million dollar mark for scholarships.”Eric Van der Laan, Frederick, was awarded a $500 Miles Karner Memorial Endowed Scholarship and a $1,000 Joseph Fleming Memorial Continuing Scholarship. An animal science major, he is the son of Pieter and Anita Van der Laan.“It is exciting to celebrate the accomplishments of incoming students as well as those who will be graduating soon,” Miller said. “Our students have demonstrated outstanding leadership and service while achieving the highest level of academic performance again this year and our awards banquet provides an opportunity to recognize their accomplishments. Awards for leadership and academic performance and the presentation of scholarships build pride in our students and their families, the faculty, donors and other supporters of both the college and division as a whole.” The college is part of the OSU Division of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, along with two statewide agencies: the Oklahoma Agricultural Experiment Station and Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service.
