Last Wednesday I posed the following question on the Frederick Press-Leader website poll:
Should there be a ban on assault weapons?
I am very pleased to report that as of today, Monday, July 30th, there have been 5,816 responses to the poll and 100% of them have been “Yes” there should be a ban on assault weapons.
This has strengthened my faith in human nature.
You see, and I feel safe in writing this, our website is not yet viewed by politicians seeking to scare people into voting for them, nor is it viewed by lobbyist groups lying about how assault weapons with 100 round magazines are used primarily by deer hunters and should remain legal and banning assault weapons will mean the utter destruction of this country as we know it.
I’m not sure if that means the deer will rise up and slay us all or just what exactly will happen (there is a squirrel with rather shifty eyes that peeks into my backyard every now and then).
Now don’t get me wrong. I own a couple of guns myself, plus I have the utmost respect for the United States Constitution, especially the First Amendment.
The point remains that a semi automatic weapon with a 100 round magazine is designed for one thing and one thing only, to kill people, and to kill lots of them.
Everyone has the right to protect themselves, their family and their home. They do not have the right to go out looking for people who, in their mind, is a threat to them and kill them.
And if they are paranoid enough to believe that some country is stupid enough to send ground troops onto to American soil, then there is the first part of the 2nd Amendment that is often overlooked. “A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state…”
To sum this up, you can’t defend anything with a bunch of unorganized, untrained, armed to the teeth “individuals” running amok and shooting everything in sight.
Anyone who feels this kind of a “militia” is necessary needs to spend some time in military service first. At least get a grasp of what you are talking about.
Anyway, I digress; thanks to all 5,816 of you who have made me feel a whole lot better about the common sense factor of the American people.
Now if we can just get rid of that stupid open carry law that goes into effect November 1.
