The Lady Bombers are playing a good ballgame in summer fastpitch. Frederick soared into action against Merritt and Mangum on July 19.
When Frederick took the field against Merritt, the defense was led by Emily Wasinger. “She threw a good, consistent game. Emily struck out a bunch of batters that had a tough time hitting against her at the plate,” said Lady Bombers head coach Miles Smith.
Jaidyn Thompson led off the offensive effort. She was given credit for making a great effort and also earning several base hits. Emily Howard also got a piece of the action, earning several base hits throughout the game on the cleanup crew at the bottom of the lineup. The coach did express a concern for the team playing a game he described as a “little flat,” but believes it is due to the extreme heat the varsity has persevered through during game time. “We’ve got to find a way to fight through it. I think it will come along as we play in those conditions longer and adjust to it, but we just haven’t been out in it that much yet. The more we get used to it, the more we are out in it, it will get better,” he explained.
Frederick won 5-0.
Frederick has nurtured a very symbiotic, healthy relationship with Mangum. These two teams consistently challenge each other in games to play their best. “It gives us an incentive to work hard,” Smith stated.
Kalyn Grice pitched. She is back in the lineup after battling a knee injury last year. “She throws well. I am proud of how she has come along and she is a great team player. Her attitude is always positive and she is encouraging to her teammates. She’s throwing great,” shared the head coach. Not only is Grice playing a good defensive game, but she is also excelling at the plate. In this game she earned two base hits.
Ashlyn Brite has been filling in for Mikeala Bray at shortstop. “She did an outstanding job. She will be an outstanding player in the future and we are excited to have her coming up on the team,” the head coach said.
Jaidyn Thompson, Emily Howard and Emily Wasinger each played a good game for the offense. Starla Hicks and Savanha Smith also were named for performing well at the plate. “Really, I was pleased with how we did all the way down the lineup at the plate,” stated the coach.
The Lady Bombers gave up two runs in the last inning. Frederick soared over Mangum 11-2.
The junior varsity also stepped up to bat, playing strong against Mangum’s junior varsity.
Many of the upcoming Lady Bombers played in this game. “I tell you what, the junior varsity can play, too,” the coach said, giving credit to the junior varsity for their spirit on the field.
Jade Hernandez pitched. Smith explained how Hernandez has such a talent - that if she were to pitch for another team there is a strong possibility she could be starting on a varsity level. She is in good company at Frederick, which has a strong lineup of talented pitchers. With a little time, there is a possibility that she will be leading the Lady Bombers from the pitchers circle. Hernandez had some good company backing her up on the field, too. Smith named some of the team’s talent who made great plays. Terra Morrison made some good defensive plays at first base. Savanha Smith made several important defensive strides at third base. Alexus Page is also playing well in the outfield. Some good offense was played. Mackenzie Thorton earned a base hit and is becoming an aggressive player. Terra Morrison earned a hit. Oliveah Juanes also played well at the plate.
The Lady Bombers junior varsity beat Mangum’s junior varsity 7-2.
