Cotton pageants held during festival

Posted

Frederick held its 11th annual Cotton Festival on Saturday, Nov. 3, 2018.

The Little Miss Cotton Boll and the Maid of Cotton pageants began at 1 p.m. Miss Frederick 2018 Kendyll Ellis was the mistress of ceremonies for the events.

The contestants competing in the Little Miss Cotton Boll were Harley Dunlap, Claire Collins, Milena Martinez, Taijah Hankieson, Elexia Townson, Tambri Smith, Addison Shepherd, Lakyn Gutierrez and Crosby Nuncio. These young ladies are in the first through third-grades.

Each girl took the stage and Ellis asked them what was their favorite thing made from cotton. Answers ranged from a hand stitched blue cotton pillow made by one contestants’ sister to money to a teddy bear to the American flag.

The 2018 Little Miss Tillman County Free Fair sang “Frère Jacques” and the 2017 Little Miss Cotton Boll tap-danced to “Cotton Eyed Joe.”

The contestants competing in the Maid of Cotton pageant were Karli Olsen, Azalayan Schiavo, Delaney McIntyre, Hadlee Hunt, Cierra Collins. These young ladies are in the fourth through sixth-grades.

These girls were asked how cotton benefits Tillman County as each one took the stage.

Ellis was supposed to sing “Downtown” by Lady Antebellum but a CD malfunction left her with no music. Like the great performer she is, she pulled a number from her repertoire and sang the Patsy Cline hit “Crazy” as an a cappella performance. Ellis will be performing as Laurey in “Oklahoma” Nov. 17 at 7 p.m. and Nov. 18 at 2 p.m. in the Fine Arts Auditorium at Frederick High School.

Taijah Hankieson sold the most Chili Cook-off tickets for the Little Miss Cotton Boll pageant and Hadlee Hunt sold the most chili cook-off tickets for the Maid of Cotton pageant.

The winners of the Little Miss Cotton Boll were:

• Claire Collins - second runner-up,

• Taijah Hankieson - first runner-up, and

• Crosby Nuncio was crowned the 2018 Little Miss Cotton Boll.

The winners of the Maid of Cotton were:

• Cierra Collins - first runner-up, and

• Hadlee Hunt was crowned the 2018 Maid of Cotton.
