The Frederick Bombers played host to the Hinton Comets last Friday evening.
The Comets have struggled mightily of late, and carry with them an 0-8 season record to prove it.
The National Guard was on hand and brought along with them special jerseys to wear for the National Guard Game of the week.
The black and mostly camouflage jerseys with the red and gold emblems of the Oklahoma National Guard paired well with the Bomber helmets.
The Airborne Demonstration Team had a busy week and shared with fans a fly-over of a pair of World War II C-47s flying in formation.
Boogie Baby, Wildcat, the Spirit of FHS, and the Bombers all burst onto the stage just in time for the opening kick-off. It was certainly a sight to see.
The Bombers made quick work of a short field; Kyle Edwards returned a punt to the 10 yard line where RB-Kemontra Wright followed his lead blockers into the endzone untouched to open scoring for the Bombers. K-Marco Clemente kick failed. Bombers 6 - Comets 0.
The second play of the second quarter the Bombers gave the Comets some more of the same as Kemontra Wright again followed lead blockers into the endzone for his 2nd touchdown of the night. Clemente kick fell short. Bombers 12 - Comets 0.
With just under 9 minutes left in the first half of play, Coach Tyler dialed the same number he’d call on and Kemontra Wright followed lead blockers for a 3rd time into the endzone for his 3rd touchdown of the evening. The Bombers tried JJ Tittle as kicker for the young Marco Clemente, but the outcome was the same - the kick failed. Bombers 18 - Comets 0.
The Comets managed to get the ball down to the Bomber 2 yard line late in the first half, but the Bomber defense did not fail. On the first play from the 2 yard line, sophomore DT-Josh Stacy broke through the offensive line and attacked the QB dropping him in the backfield.
The 2nd play from the 2 yard line, Stacy again burst through the line bringing the QB down for a loss, but not before senior LB-Joey “J-Lo” Lopez reached in and poked the ball out of his hands and into the waiting arms of SS-Kyle Edwards.
The Comets in the 3rd quarter threatened again driving deep into the red-zone.
Junior FS-Gustavo Gaytan would intercept a pass at the Bomber 5 yard line. Gaytan picked up blocks from seniors Diego Reyes, Ryder Ramirez and Daniel Contreras and sophomore Kyle Edwards escorted Gaytan 95 yards into the endzone untouched for a touchdown. Clemente’s PAT attempt was good. Bombers 25-0.
Coach Tyler cued up Mr. Touchdown, and Kemontra Wright got his longest run of the night.
Wright once again followed his blockers around the right side and score from 32 yards out. Clemente’s PAT was good. Bombers 32 - Comets 0.
Senior RB-Jacob Flores scored the final blow for the Bombers from 2 yards out. Clemente’s PAT attempt failed. Bombers 38 - Comets 0.
The Comets scored with time running out on the clock ending the game with the Frederick Bombers 38 - Comets 6.
Play-off picture: The Frederick Bombers will host that team from the north that starts with a letter “H” for the District A-2 title. The winner will likely host Texhoma in the first round and have home field in the playoffs as long as they continue to win; and the 2nd place team will host Thomas-Fay-Custer.
For the last two playoff slots, Merritt will take 3rd place and will travel north to play Fairview and the winner of the Cordell vs Mangum game will make the long trek to Hooker, OK for first round action.
Fridays game looks to be a barn burner, it will be an electric environment with the district title on the line. Game starts at 7, might want to get there early, since it is Senior Night. Go Bombers!
