The Frederick Bombers opened their season hosting the Comanche Indians, who have been struggling through some unsuccessful seasons recently.
The Bombers began the game firing on all cylinders. The defense pushed the Indians back after the opening kick-off to negative yardage, where they would remain most of the game. The Comanche Indians amassed a mere 17 yards of total offense on the night, eight yards on the ground and nine yards in the air.
The defensive front for the Bombers had control of the line of scrimmage from the first whistle and held the Indians out of the end zone all night. The Bombers scored on their opening offensive possession.
Punt returner, running back Christian Reyes, put them in great position, returning the ball to the Comanche 30-yard line.
From there the Bombers tried to “swing for the fences” as they went for the home run shot that fell out of reach of wide receiver Darius Randle. On the second play from scrimmage, Quarterback Cody Middick followed his backfield around the right side of the offensive line and cruised into the end zone untouched for the opening score.
The Bombers were unsuccessful at a two-point conversion attempt.
The Frederick players seemed to make it a point to stop themselves at times, but came together and improved in the fourth quarter of the game.
With the Game still 6-0, early in the fourth quarter, the Bombers scored three times on the ground:
* Jeremiah Adams scored from three yards out,
* Christian Reyes scored from one yard out, and
* Ty Neugebaur found room around the right side and scored from 29 yards out.
Kicker Noah Cooper hit two for three from the point-after-touchdown line, putting the Bombers up 26-0.
With the game slipping away, Comanche’s desperation and frustration showed as Quarterback Hunter Van Oven threw the ball up and into the hands of Strong Safety Diego Reyes and he carried the interception into the end zone from 35 yards out.
Cooper’s kick was good ending the scoring at 33-0.
It was a good win for first-season Frederick Head Coach Bret Tyler.
The Bombers are scheduled to travel to Electra, Texas to take on the Tigers this week.
The Tigers made a deep run into the playoff’s last season, but lost some key position players.
Friday’s game has the makings of a “barn burner” for Frederick Bomber fans who can make the trip.
