School Board Considers Drug Tests for All Extra-Curricular Students
by Ray Wallace
Editor/General Manager

The Frederick School Board is considering having all extra-curricular students take a drug test at the first of the school year.

In the past the students were subject to a random test throughout the year, and that will continue regardless of the board’s decision to make the initial test for all extra-curricular students.

Board president James Heap made the recommendation but added it would also depend on the amount additional cost involved.

Board member Pat Stacey agreed with Heap’s recommendation. “I’m all for it,” he told the board.

Superintendent Shannon Vanderburg said he would get more information, including the additional cost and the number of students who be included in the drug testing, and will bring that information to the board at their next meeting.

The board did approve Bill Blankenship’s request to take members of the FFA Chapter to the National Convention in Louisville, Kentucky.

Supt. Vanderburg told the board that Bond Project work on Prather Brown Elementary is scheduled to be complete September 17 and work on the gym on October 17.

He scheduled a Special Meeting of the board to approve bids for work on the last building at the site.

Vanderburg presented the board with the report that all three Frederick School sites have been accredited. The board approved the report.

The board approved the Professional Development Committee for 2013-2014: Danna Akin, Rob Frederick, Classie Nolan, Lindsey Ballard, Julie Fryer, Karen Schoonover, Randy Biggs, Marilee Hayward, Sam Staats, Carla Brite, Sumantha Lawson, Heath Stehr, Max Clayton, Lacy McPhail, LeaAnn Terry, Janice Crume, Megan Newton and Amy Waldroop

In personnel matters, the board approved the retirement resignations of Nancy Baxter, Judy Bobo and the resignations of Grant Givens, Kelly Reichert, and Cora Sue Tennessen.

They employed Eric Douthit as Temporary Secondary Teacher, Chris Diaz as Temporary Middle School Custodian, Brian Bigham as Temporary Elementary Teacher and Head Girls Basketball Coach, Kari Ayers as Temporary Curriculum Director, and the Certified Staff:
